Glock 45 M.O.S. – the perfect entry-level pistol

An unusual Glock – with surprisingly strong qualities

Compared to many other pistols in the Glock range, the Glock 45 MOS is a rather unusual design. Nevertheless, since its acquisition at the beginning of last year, it has quickly become one of our preferred pistols – for reasons that are not immediately apparent at first glance.

In this article, we take a closer look at the Glock 45 MOS and explain why we consider it not only one of the most convincing Glock pistols in the current range, but also one of the best entry-level pistols when looking for a versatile all-round solution with a limited budget.

The facts: What is the technology behind the Glock 45 MOS?

Let’s start with the facts before we go into our practical impressions. The Glock 45 MOS is basically a so-called “reverse stretch” pistol in 9 mm caliber. It combines the full-size grip frame of the Glock 17 with the shorter slide and barrel length of the Glock 19 and is additionally equipped with the Glock MOS optics cut.

Other features that distinguish the Glock 45 within the Glock series include the consistent trigger pull, the reversible magazine catch, the ambidextrous slide stop lever, the Modular Backstrap System (MBS) for individual adjustment, and the precise and proven reliable GLOCK Marksman Barrel (GMB).

Points of criticism on paper – and why they don't convince us

Of course, there is also legitimate criticism of this configuration. The shorter barrel is accompanied by a shortened sight line – usually unproblematic for concealed carry, but often seen as a disadvantage for maximum precision. In conjunction with the larger grip in Glock 17 format, the impression could therefore arise that the Glock 45 merely combines the disadvantages of both models. However, we do not share this assessment.

Practice beats theory: Our experiences in action

From our experience, a longer sight line and a longer slide make only a slight difference in most realistic scenarios involving handguns. Given today’s wide selection of micro-compact 9mm pistols designed primarily for concealed carry, many Glock 19 models are either rarely used or are carried exclusively openly in a holster with full gear.

In such configurations, concealability – especially within the framework of German weapons law – no longer plays a role. The shorter slide of the Glock 45 often allows for a slightly faster target acquisition, while the full-size grip clearly compensates for the ergonomic disadvantages of the smaller Glock 19 grip.

Full-size grip, short slide: A clear trend

The general trend towards pistols with a full-size grip and shorter slide confirms these observations. This design is also increasingly common in competitive shooting – partly due to its practical advantages, and partly because it allows the use of larger and more effective compensators without exceeding the size limits in IPSC practical shooting.

At the same time, a grip in Glock 17 size in combination with suitable magazines still allows capacities of over 17 rounds, which still fit into the measuring box in compliance with the rules. In combination with the enormous selection of aftermarket parts for the 9 mm Glock platform, this results in a high degree of individualization and tuning potential.

Tuning, training, and competition: The potential of the Glock 45 MOS

In the past year, we have shot the Glock 45 MOS in numerous configurations – with different optics, triggers, barrels, compensators, weapon lights and even alternative slides. The Glock platform is ideal for users who like to experiment and specifically adapt their weapon to their own needs.

Even if Glock pistols are not considered classic high-end competition weapons, very good placements at local IPSC matches can easily be achieved with consistent training and selected aftermarket components.

Conclusion: Is the Glock 45 MOS worth it as an entry-level pistol?

In conclusion, we would like to hear your opinion on the Glock 45 MOS: From your point of view, is it a worthwhile purchase, or are there models within the Glock product range that better cover this purpose?
